Exercise: In 400 words or less, write a scene in which two people
who've texted on an online dating website, meet face-to-face for the
first time.
______________________
Back in the day, a couple’s blind date was usually arranged by a
family member, a friend, or an official matchmaker.
The go-between would be acquainted with the two individuals and
usually familiar with their personal qualities, preferences, and
backgrounds.
Today, a single person hunting for a romantic interest might try an
online dating service. Once enrolled, he or she will scan scores of
photos, select an appealing candidate, study the stranger's bio, and
then make contact. If the interest is mutual, then it's game on! A
first date is arranged by the two parties. No go-between. But their
first face-to-face meeting can often be a startling experience … and
fodder for a very interesting story.
______________________
Critiquing: Did the scene draw you in? Why or why not? How
believable was the dating situation? Had the narrator conveyed the
mood of the moment? Was the editing sufficient? What suggestions
would you offer the writer?
